Design steel structures

Steel is a very good solution and widely used both in new building and in renovations. From the design point of view, steel construction is a simple process; the real challenge is to fully exploit the characteristics of this material, in particular its ductility. The Technical Standards define which performance to guarantee for steel structures precisely taking into account its particular capacities, especially in the presence of seismic actions.

What are the crucial phases to be respected to guarantee a good result, also taking into account horizontal actions such as wind and earthquake?

We can say that we are designing with steel, we need to correct the structural behavior of the building, to analyze the instability of the building.

Design of a steel structure

In this focus we reconstruct the workflow needed to design and verify a steel structure, inspired by Italian and European regulations references.

  • The materials
  • The static scheme
  • Actions on the building
  • Structure analysis
  • Global audits
  • Local audits
  • The connections
  • Each phase of the project can be done with the module STEEL of TRAVILOG.

The materials

The choice of construction is regulated and guided by chapter 4.2 and 11.3 of the Technical Standards for 2018

The Italian Legislative Reference Guide to the Construction of the Steel Industry

The FYK and the Characteristic Breakdown Voltage Ft. the most specific reference is the UNI EN 10025 which classifies the characteristic tensions of the steels according to the chemical composition and therefore to the specific and particular uses that will be adopted. The nomenclature to refer to supplies of steel is of the type: S 235 JR + C + N

S construction steel

235 yield strength characteristic in N / mm²

JR alphanumeric indications related to resilience

C additional symbol for use

N additional symbol relating to the supply condition

Below, as an example, the mechanical characteristics of the supply chain according to the indications of UNI EN 10025.
